Mentors_RangeEstablished in 1918 as a winemaking co-operative, KWV is a famous and inextricable part of the local wine industry. The company today encompasses a multitude of award-winning wines and brandies. While the iconic Roodeberg may have been the first ‘flagship’ wine, in recent years The Mentors range has taken over that role. These wines strive to be a true expression of terroir, experimenting with different cultivars from different areas and creating a new standard of excellence and consistency.

According to those in the know, premiumisation is not only a thing but a global trend. Brands and services aim to offer a range of products at different price points, often aimed at different consumers. The ever-present lookout for new ways to add more value is everywhere. It’s particularly prevalent in the wine industry, with both large-scale producers and small to medium wineries setting out their offerings with labels like entry-level, premium, reserve etc. Some seem to get it quite wrong at times, asking premium (and above) prices for wines that are mediocre at best. Whether or not premiumisation was a goal in mind during creation of The Mentors range, they’ve very much gotten it right.

In 2006, The Mentors range was created by KWV with the purpose of allowing the winemakers free reign in terms of creativity, experimentation and sourcing the best grapes from the best vineyards. It’s no small task to create wines that are earmarked to be the flagship products for a company such as KWV but the team behind The Mentors have come out swinging and the results are nothing less than spectacular.

If it’s quality you’re concerned with, the production of The Mentors ticks all the boxes one would expect: stringent selection of vineyards and grapes, only the ‘best of the best’ wines get bottled and even then, quantities are limited. If the wines don’t reach the high quality standards, it simply doesn’t get released. For example, The Mentors Grenache Blanc was last released in 2011  and was only given the green light again this year with release of the 2014 vintage. They simply don’t mess about: if it’s not good enough, it’s not going out.

Putting aside the economics of cost, production and any other factors that influence the decision to release a wine or not, I respect the philosophy behind this range immensely and (in my opinion, at least) it pays dividends. I have not yet encountered a wine from the range that I have not enjoyed or adored. A brand offering such consistent quality and innovation is not to be sniffed at. You should rather be sniffing their wines.

I’m not going to say much about the wines because they very much speak for themselves. Also, if I started, this post would become very long, very quickly. I will mention that I was enamoured by the new release Grenache Blanc 2014, citrus and apple notes greet your nose and the wine itself is fresh with a clean but creamy lingering palate. I would not recommend sharing this with anyone – it’s just too good.

So because I love The Mentors and because the good people at KWV love sharing their very best with wine lovers everywhere, I have a mixed case (valued at R1290) of brand new release The Mentors wines to give away. The case consists of the following wines:

Grenache Blanc 2014
Sauvignon Blanc – Elim 2014
Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon 2014
Orchestra 2013
Canvas 2013
Shiraz 2013

To enter, simply comment below and tell me which great individual (historic figure, musician, artist – either still with us or someone who has already shuffled off this mortal coil) you would want to share a bottle of The Mentors with and why? Be creative, describe how you see it happening in your mind’s eye. Interesting answers may or may not count more than shorter ones. *ahem*

For additional entries, retweet the link to the competition with the #MeetGreatness or use the tweet below:

Tell how you would like to with The Mentors and you could win. https://incogvino.co.za/?p=562

Winners will be drawn and announced on Monday 13 July.

*** Competition is now closed. Congratulations to Lize Hartley for the winning comment!***

A Particularly Gorgeous Meme Example

A Particularly Gorgeous Meme Example

I have a soft spot for memes.  I love them. They tickle my funny bone in the best way and they are EVERYWHERE.  Condescending Wonka, Bad Luck Brian, Skeptical Baby, Grumpy Cat… the list is endless. If you’re not sure what I’m on about, do click over to the Memesly.com list of popular memes. But be warned, you may lose hours of productivity…

With the rise of meme hilarity on the internet, people have (as one does on the internet) started making their own memes. Meme generators are everywhere, where you can choose or insert an image and add a caption. Knowing this, I did a little giveaway on the SuperFANS mailing list. We were generously given 5 more double sets of tickets to pass on to deserving SuperFANS (in addition to our previous Magic of Bubbles giveaway). And the winners were chosen through trial by meme!

Here are a few of the best entries I received. A fantastic exercise in MCC driven creativity.

First up was a classic Doge meme:

Then a spectacular cat gif, which really clinched the tickets for the entrant:

A touch of Gatsby never hurt anyone:

And a bit of wrestling action, underlining the important difference between Champagne and our local offerings:

Batman educating Robin on that selfsame difference:

And finally, Ned Stark pointing out important MCC drinking etiquette:

Magic of Bubbles

Summer is upon us, dearest winos and readers, and few things are as summery and refreshing as the Magic of Bubbles. Whether your taste is expensive and French or divine and local, we are heading into bubbly season. And there’s no better place to get your fizzy on than at the Franschhoek Cap Classique and Champagne Festival.  The festival takes place on the lawns around the Huguenot Monument on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 November. Read on, because I have two double tickets to give away…

The festival promises to be nirvana for those who seek the pleasure of bubbles. Not only will classic French Champagne – the likes of Piper Heidsieck, Champagne Guy Charbaut and Veuve Clicquot – be represented, but also some of the best MCC South Africa has to offer: Pierre Jourdan, Morena, Môreson, La Motte, Boschendal, Leopard’s Leap, Noble Hill, Plaisir de Merle, Anthonij Rupert Wines, Graham Beck Wines, Krone, Pongracz, Simonsig, Steenberg and Villiera. A veritable who’s who of the precious liquid.

Some of Franschhoek’s star restaurants will also be there to ensure festival goers are well fed with delicious menus. Bread & Wine, The Salmon Bar, Haute Cabrière, Le Franschhoek, L’Ermitage, Restaurant at Grand Provence and Mont Rochelle are only a few of those who will be fuelling the hungry Champagne-seekers.

The theme of this year’s festival is Black & White, with the focus on parasols and panama hats. There is even a ‘Best Dressed’ competition, with the best dressed couples on Friday and Saturday walking away with a 2-night safari at Ngala Safari Lodge.

Is your mouth watering yet? Are you thirsty for some luxurious treats? Tickets are R200 pp and are available through Webtickets. But how about you try your luck instead? The fabulous folks from MasterCard and the festival have given me TWO DOUBLE TICKETS to give away for entry to the festival on SUNDAY 30 NOVEMBER. To enter, you need to:

Daily Dish's amazing menus

Daily Dish’s amazing menus

We’re all busy people. If we’re not out working hard to bring home the bacon, we’re busy with family, friends, hobbies, exercise, studies… There’s always something. For me, the first thing that flies out the window when I’m swamped is my diet. Even the simplest healthy eating routine gets dropped like a hot, carby potato when I’m buzzing around. I either don’t have time to cook, or I’m too tired. Or there aren’t groceries in the fridge. Cue take-aways. Not ideal.

Enter Daily Dish. A simple solution not only for those of us perpetually strapped for time but also great if you’re out of fresh dinner ideas and the ol’ mac and cheese just doesn’t cut it anymore.

Daily dish is a straightforward service that’s easy to sign up for and offers not only excellently priced meals but flexibility and quality. It takes the hassle out of fresh, healthy dinners. You sign up, choose your menu and they send you everything you need for four meals (and plenty of leftovers!) for a week. Simply go to the website, register (for free) and then browse their menus. They have three options: Classic, Low Carb and Vegetarian. You can have a look at the recipes for the following week and choose your menu. There’s a deadline for orders with the delivery date clearly stated so you know exactly when to expect it.

This week, I chose the vegetarian menu because it looked absolutely fantastic. Admittedly, I “enriched” two of them with some added animal protein but the options were just mouthwatering. The recipes are idiot-proof but make you feel like a top chef. And, because Incogvino is all about the wine (which forms part of lifestyle, of course), I have a little pairing suggestion for each meal I made this week:

  • Caponata on Ciabatta Lovely, fragrant aubergine based dish with olives rosemary and tomatoes. I had some ostrich steak on the side with this, prepped medium to medium rare and paired it with 2009 Zonnebloem Pinotage. The pairing worked well with both the meat and the vegetarian main dish.
  • Aglio e Olio with Blistered Cherry Tomatoes – Fabulous, garlicky pasta dish with gorgeous spinach and a hint of chilli for a lovely bite. I added some smoked salmon trout to the dish by flaking it generously on top once finished. Paired it with a 2007 Vriesenhof Pinot Noir but the dish will work well with a Chardonnay too, not too oaked but rather one with some zest.
  • Feta Sweet Potato Jackets – The easiest of the meals (which really makes it a no-brainer as the others were all very simple to prepare), I kept this one straight vegetarian. Squeeze lots of lime on top and have it with a flavourful Sauvignon Blanc, like the Nederburg Airhawk.
  • Chilli Bean Wrap – This was my ultimate dish of the week. Dead easy recipe but packed with flavour. Also made it vegetarian but it’ll be great with some added mince (or try chicken mince for a fun twist). Tex-mex grub actually calls for a beer (whatever your preference may be) so I didn’t pair this with a specific wine but you can definitely crack open a light red, like a Grenache or a light red blend.

And now, folks, the very generous and brilliant folks from Daily Dish have given us THREE Daily Dish subscriptions for one week (that’s FOUR MEALS) to give away! Here’s how to enter:

1) Like them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.
2) Retweet the link to this post and share it on the interwebs. You can make up your own tweet/post or you can just copy and paste this:

Dish me up! Win a week’s worth of delicious @DailyDishForYou meals. Enter here: http://bit.ly/1tSMdv7

3) Leave a comment below telling us which menu (Classic, Low Carb or Vegetarian) you’d prefer and why.

Winners will be drawn randomly on Friday 7 November at 17:00. Please make sure that you live in one of their specified delivery areas.

***COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED***

Van Ryn Distillery - this is where the magic happens

Van Ryn Distillery – this is where the magic happens

Let’s not beat around the proverbial bush here: if you say “brandy” to most South Africans, the word association to complete the phrase would undoubtedly be “Coke”. Now, in the spirit of Incogvino, we do not judge. If you enjoy your tot of firewater with fizzy, sugary drinks and ice added then so be it. To each their own. The only thing that irks me about that image is the fact that it seems to overshadow the fact that South Africa produces the best brandies in the world. Brandies that regularly wipe the floor with Cognacs and Armagnacs. Trophy, gold medal and overall award-winning brandies. And not always the type that you mix with fizzy drinks. Here is a little peek at some of our best brandies, as well as a giveaway of two fine specimens of these prize-winning beauties.

Debate and dissension around the merit of wine awards and competitions aside (that is a topic for an entirely different series of posts), there are some local and international wine and spirits awards that are widely accepted as indicators of excellence, including the Veritas awards (often called the “Oscars” of the local wine industry), the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) and the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. South African brandies are regularly well-represented at these competitions, with Van Ryn and KWV often cleaning up. ***Update: Tim James kindly pointed out that SA brandies often don’t compete internationally against Cognac directly, as the latter has its own category. Our brandies are still world-class, many made in a style reminiscent of Cognac and do compete commercially – both locally and globally – for the preference of consumers.***

Oude Meester Demant

Take, for example, the performance of the Van Ryn 15 Year old Cask Reserve over the past few years: gold medal at IWSC for the past 5 years, Best Brandy Trophy at the International Spirits Challenge in 2010, Double Gold at this year’s Veritas awards. Impressive, isn’t it? And these impressive results are not limited to the Van Ryn or KWV 15 or 20 -year old brandies. Elsenburg (the Agricultural Training Institute) release their first potstill brandy (13yo) which walked away with a Double Gold at this year’s Veritas awards. Other consistently performing offerings include Collison’s White Gold Pot still Brandy, Richelieu 10 Years Vintage Brandy and – bringing us to our giveaway – Oude Meester Demant Pot still Brandy (Double Gold at Veritas 2014) and Klipdrift Gold brandy (Gold ad Veritas 2014).

Launched in 2008, the Oude Meester Demant pot still brandy has also been racking up awards and medals. Double distilled in Savalle stills, blended from brandies up to 8 years old, this brandy has a freshness underlying the maturity. Oak, cinnamon and dried fruit on the nose, perhaps even a hint of chocolate. Soft spice and apricot on the palate and a smooth, easy-drinking finish. Best enjoyed as is, in a proper glass but mixes well (and not just with Coke – try Ginger Ale and lemon).

Klipdrift Gold is one of my favourites. Another blended pot still brandy, the oldest component is 21 years old. Lovely pale gold liquid, slightest floral note amongst the myriad of dried fruit (peach, apricot, pear) and citrus. Cigarbox and chocolate notes add seriousness and complexity. Definitely to be enjoyed straight up, but if you do want to mix it, use it for something more sophisticated; a stylish cocktail for instance.

Now that we’ve established the excellence of SA brandy, it’s giveaway time! We have TWO gift packs to give away, each containing 1 x Oude Meester Demant and 1 x Klipdrift Gold. To enter, all you need to do is comment and tweet:

  • Leave a comment below and tell us what you think about SA brandy. Do you prefer it with your fizzy softdrink? Do you think Cognac is better?  Are we all on the wrong track here? Or do you think we make the best brandies in the world? We’re looking for opinions, no right or wrong answers here! Or just let us know which is your favourite brandy.
  • Tweet us @WeAreIncogvino, share the link to this post and use the hashtag #BestBrandy. You can make up your own tweet, or use the one below
WIN a gift pack with two of SA’s with . Enter here

Winners will be selected, announced and notified on Friday 17 October at 17:00.
